Tacoma Youth Chorus
Online music education via Zoom platform

Tacoma Youth Chorus (TYC) is a performing arts program for youth, grades 1-12. Pre-COVID, TYC’s program consisted of in-person rehearsals, performances, and tours. Because of unique safety concerns related to in-person choir activities, our esteemed Founder and Artistic Director, Judy Herrington, has designed a creative and innovative music education program for the fall, building on decades of TYC’s successful vocal training and musical development. Choirs will focus on world music to deepen and broaden understanding and appreciation of cultures beyond our own experiences. In addition, a year-long partnership with internationally-acclaimed composer and clinician, Dr. Rollo Dilworth, will have all the choirs studying compositions of African-American spirituals, gospel music, and compositions using poetry of African-American poets. Examined within the context of historical, cultural, and social context, as well as musical elements, it is through our music we hope to serve and give voice to issues of racism, oppression, and injustice, embracing inclusion, diversity, and equity.

Online rehearsals begin in October and culminate in June 2021.

We hope to resume in-person rehearsals in the spring when safe to do so.

We choose to focus on not what we are missing,

but what we are gaining from this experience.
